French power and transportation company Alstom SA has (agreed) to pay 772 million dollars in penalties for bribing foreign countries. The Department of Justice announced the company willplead guilty of violating the foreign corrupt practices act, in what is poised tobe the largest penalty of its type ever assessed.
13 people were run down by a rampaging driver in the French city of Dijon. Authorities say that the attacker was detained and (suffered) from psychological problems. Some witnesses reported hearing the driver say “Allah is great”.
A white Milwaukee police officer who was fired after fatally shooting a mentally ill black man in April will not face criminal charges. The (district) attorney for Milwaukee says Christopher Manney shot Dontre Hamilton in self-defense. Manney says that Hamilton resisted arrest when frisked.
And call it a Christmas miracle for one lucky Aussie. A group of firefighters were handing out candy to local children in Australia when they smelled smoke (coming) out from a nearby house. The team stepped in, including one firefighter dressed as old Saint Nick himself, and successfully rescued a man inside the home.
