An (explosion) hits the US Embassy in Turkey. A suicide bomber strikes a Shi'ite mosque in Pakistan. I'm David Deforest reporting from Washington.
At least 1 person has been killed in a suicide bombing at the US Embassy complex in Turkey. There was no immediate claim of responsibility. Officials said the victim was Turkish and had been a security guard at the (embassy) in Ankara.
An explosion rocked 1 of the tallest buildings in Mexico City,killing 25 people and injuring more than 100. Officials say the explosion occurred Thursday afternoon in the basement of the headquarters of the Mexican State Oil Company, Pemex. Greg Flakus reports.
Ambulances and rescue crews arrived as workers streamed out of the 54-story building, which was shrouded in smoke. Initial reports indicated that the explosion occurred somewhere in the basement or in the basement of an adjacent building. But Mexican Interior Minister Miguel Angel Osorio says a complete investigation will have to wait. He says the priority now is to search for people who may still be (trapped) in the lower part of the Pemex building and recover the bodies of those who have been killed. He says federal and city agencies as well private relief organizations are coordinating their work at the site. Greg Flakus, Houston.
A suicide bomber apparently targeting Shi'ites blew himself up outside a (mosque) in northwest Pakistan. At least 21 people were killed. Sharon Behn has a (David险些口误~has more/reports) report.
District police officer Mian Mohammad Saeed says the bomber detonated his explosives in a busy market outside a Shi'ite mosque in the northwestern town of Hangu just as traditional Friday afternoon prayers were ending.
He says that it was a suicide attack and that the bomb weighed some 6 to 7 kilos and happened in the main Hangu bazar,outside the mosque as people finished their prayers and were leaving. The bomber was waiting outside and he attacked them. The Shi'ites were the apparent target, he says, but there were also Sunni (casualties) because they own shops in the area. Hundreds of thousands of Cambodians flooded the streets of Phnom Penh today in honor of former King Norodom Sihanouk, who died in October. Bangladesh has withdrawn its request for World Bank funding for a bridge project dogged by allegations of corruption. The World Bank canceled the 1.2-billion-dollar loan for the bridge last year after finding evidence of corruption among Bangladeshi officials. Today, the bank said it've received a letter from the government (withdrawing) its request for funding.
