Heavy gunfire and explosions have rocked Mali's northern city of Gao,where Malian, French and West African troops are fighting Islamist (militants).Malian defense officials say the (violence) erupted after militants attacked central Gao overnight and troops moved into repel them. The French news agency reported the main court house in Gao on fire. A Malian Defense Ministry spokesman tells VOA that Gao had been liberated but that pockets of insecurity remained in the city.
Syrian state media say at least 53 people have been killed and more than 200 wounded in a car (bombing near) the headquarters of Syria's ruling Baath Party in central Damascus. A Britain-based activists group says most of the dead are civilians. State media called the blast a terrorist bombing. It struck a densely-populated area. China's state-controlled media are questioning the (credibility) of a report by a US Internet security group that is accusing the Chinese military of carrying out global cyber attacks. The report by (private security contract) or Mandiant took unusually direct aim at the Chinese government. Mandiant says itcan trace years of attacks on US co-operations to a division of the People's Liberation Army. China's rejection of the potentially embarrassing report has focused on what it says is the (unreliability) of Mandiant's using of IP addresses to determine the location of hackers.
The defense team for South African Olympian Oscar Pistorius is making its final arguments that he should be (set free on bail). Defense lawyer Barry Roux criticized investigators by what he called the poor quality of their evidence. South Africa's (eyewitness) news broke the story Thursday morning that Hilton Botha faces seven counts of attempted murder. He is due to appear in court this May with two other police officers. It is alleged that officers were (intoxicated) when they opened fire on a minibus taxi loaded with passengers. The group was driving a state vehicle at the time. They were arrested in 2011, but charges were later provisionally withdrawn. They have now been reinstated. Ronald Noble, interpol secretary general says Suljic is believed to be (an associate of) a match-fixing ring.
