It has began in Vatican city Pope Benedict is offering his final public prayers as the holy father to tens of thousands of people gathered for the events. In (multiple)
languages, the Pope told huge crowd he is not (abandoning) the church and will continue to serve through prayer after his retirement later this week. Benedict, leader of more
than a billion Roman Catholics around the world, will hold his final general (audience) in St. Peters on Wednesday. Cardinals are beginning to arrive in Rome for the (conclave),
the gathering to elect his successor. Meantime, there is a (petition) to have a Cardinal of the Los Angeles diocese Roger Mahony blocked from attending because of his
(involvement) in cover up his priests who were involved in molesting children over a period of many years. The Vatican is criticizing the media for adding or it called

Regional African leaders have signed a UN-mediated agreement aimed at ending two decades of (conflicts) in the troubled east of the Democratic Republic of Congo. The leaders
signed the deal Sunday in the Ethiopia capital, Addis Ababa. UN Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon attended the (signing ceremony), declaring the pact to be just the beginning.
Commitment by the president of Democratic Republic of Congo to implement all (what) that we expect the DRC government and people would do, including security sector reform as
well as capacity building and closely working together with the leaders of the (neighboring countries).
The agreement could lead to the formation of a regional force in the mineral-rich east DRC to (combat) rebels in the area.
Afghan officials say militants have hit Afghanistan with a string of attacks today. Authorities say Afghan security forces shot and killed a would-be suicide bomber in a Kabul
(neighborhood) that is home to government department and (diplomatic missions). Police say the attackers' car was loaded with (explosives). Another explosive-laden vehicle
struck intelligence agency office in the eastern city of Jalalabad, killing two people and wounding 3 others. The Taliban has claimed (responsibility) for that attack.
Italians are heading to the polls to choose new leadership as the country tries to pull itself from (recession). National elections are taking place today in Monday with all
members of the Euro Zone keeping a close eye on the results of the economic bloc's third largest economy. The most recent public opinion poll indicates the Democratic Party and

Palestinian unrest is (escalating) following the death of a prisoner in Israeli custody. Robert Berger reports for VOA from Jerusalem.
Palestinians burned tires and threw stones at Israeli troops, who responded with tear gas and rubber bullets. The clashes occurred at several locations in the west bank as 3000
Palestinian prisoners held a one-day (hunger strike). The protest followed the death of Arafat Jaradat, who died in Israeli custody.
Jaradat's father, who (identified) the body, said there were signs of blood on his head. He told Israel radio that his 30-year-old son was in good health when he was arrested
last week. Israeli authorities say Jaradat was not beaten during (interrogation) and that he died of a heart attack. Palestinian officials have demanded an international
