North Korea is threatening to launch a pre-emptive nuclear (strike against) the United States. Steve Herman reports.
The threat (attributed to) a spokesman from North Korea's Foreign Ministry was carried by the country's central news agency and also broadcast.
The Ministry spokesman is (quoted) as saying that because the United States is about to ignite a nuclear war, our (revolutionary) arm forces will be exercising our right to (pre-emptive) nuclear attack. North Korea has made no secret it is incensed about fresh sanctions against it by the UN Security Council. It is also expressing a strong displeasure with annual military drills underway involving American and South Korean forces. Steve Herman, VOA news, Seoul.
In a new twist in Kenyan's vote counting difficulties, the party of (presidential) candidate Raila Odinga says it has evidence of vote rigging and is calling for the tally to be halted. Gabe Joselow reports.英语口语培训
Mr Odinga's running mate, vice president Kalonzo Musyoka, told reporters in Nairobi Thursday the CORD coalition has grave concerns about the conduct of the election. Among them, Musyoka said, are reports of cases where the total votes cast at a polling station (exceeded) the number of (registered voters). He also said the coalition has evidence some ballots have been (doctored).
We, as a (coalition), take the position that the national vote tallying process lacks integrity and has to be stopped and restarted using as I said earlier, (primary documents).
Musyoka said the party is considering legal action to stop the vote count. Gabe Joselow, Nairobi.
Close to half of the estimated votes were tallied by early today, they show Uhuru Kenyatta leading Prime Minister Odinga by a 53 percent to 42 percent margin. Philippines is strongly (condemning) a group of Syrian rebels for seizing 21 UN peacekeepers in the Golan Heights. The country's Foreign Ministry says the detention of the Filipino peacekeepers is a gross violation of international law. It also said the government is working to free the troops.
Venezuelans are observing another day of mourning for the late President Hugo Chavez. He died Tuesday after a long battle with cancer. Mourners lined up today at Caracas' military academy where Mr Chavez's body is lying in state. A dancer with Russia's Bolshoi ballet says he arranged for the January attack on the company's artistic director but did not ask that his victim be splashed with acid. Three suspects appeared in court today. Dancer Pavel Dmitrichenko, whose voice was just heard, and two accomplices for a bail hearing. Dmitrichenko was ordered to remain in custody at least until April 18th. Police say he paid an alleged (accomplice) about 1600 dollars to carry out the January 17th attack on ballet director Sergei Filin. Filin is left with severe burns to his face and eye. The third suspect is accused of driving the attacker to and from the scene of the crime.
An Italian court has sentenced former Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi also a media mogul, to one-year in prison for publishing and leaking (transcripts) of a police wiretap. The court handed down the sentence today. Mr Berlusconi can appeal, and if he does, the sentence would be (suspended). Berlusconi faces two more verdicts this month for charges of tax fraud and sex with an underage prostitute.
Malaysia has rejected a (ceasefire) proposal by a Philippines-based militant group fighting for control of a section of Borneo. Prime Minister Najib Razak today said the Filipino Muslim group must (surrender) or risk being eliminated by Malaysian troops, saying time for negotiations is over. He was responding to an offer by the group's (self-proclaimed) sultan who earlier in the day announced a unilateral ceasefire and urged Malaysia to reciprocate.
