New UN sanctions on North Korea. Bin Laden's son-in-law captured. I'm Ray Kugel reporting from Washington.
The UN Security Council unanimously approved new sanctions on North Koreain (response) to its latest nuclear test. The 15-member council vote is a product of weeks of (negotiations) between the United States and North Korea's closest ally, China,following Pyongyang's (nuclear test) last month. US UN Ambassador Susan Rice says the resolution will raise the cost of North Korea's illicit nuclear program and limit its ability to (finance) and find materials and technology.
Taking together, these sanctions will bite and bite hard. They'll increase North Korea's (isolation) and raise the cost to North Korea's leaders of defying the international (community).
The new sanctions blocked any financial services or money (transfers) that could help Pyongyang's nuclear and (missile) programs while tightening travel bans and adding new names to a black-list of companies with links to North Korea's military. The (approval) of the newest UN sanctions is being welcomed by the Obama administration's point man on North Korea, Glyn Davies. VOA's Michael Bowman reports.

The DPRK leadership must choose between provocation or peace, isolation or (integration). North Korea will not achieve security, economic-prosperity and integration into the international community while it (pursues) nuclear weapons, while it threatens its neighbors, while it tramples on international norms, (abuses) its own people and refuses to fulfill its long-standing (obligations) and commitments.

Earlier Thursday, North Korea (threatened) a pre-emptive nuclear strike on the United States.
Osama bin-laden's son-in-law, a former al-Qaeda spokesman, was (captured) by the United States and brought to New York city to stand trial. (Justice) Department officials say Sulaiman Abu Ghaith will be arraigned today on charges of conspiracy to kill US nationals.
Republican congressman Peter King in New York credited CIA and FBI agents with catching him (recently) in Jordan. A Turkish Newspaper reported that Abu Ghaith was seized at a luxury hotel in the capital, Ankara.Sources said he was then (deported to) Jordan where US intelligence agents took him into custody.
A Syrian opposition spokesman says the 21 UN peacekeepers being held by Syrian rebels will soon be freed. Hisham Marwah of the western-backed Syrian national (coalition) spoke in Istanbul amid mounting international pressure to free the (peacekeepers).易说堂电话英语
These people will be released soon and because they are not (involved) in any military action or any military operation.
The peacekeepers are part of a 1000-plus force that patrols a zone between Israeland Syria in the Golan Heights.
Kenya's election chief is rejecting an allegation that results from Monday's national vote are being tempered with. Ahmed Issack Hassan says a (rigorous) verification process is in place. He made his remarks Thursday after the running mate of presidential candidate of Raila Odinga said the vote counting should be stopped because of vote (rigging). Election officials continued to manually count the ballots after a new electronic system broke down. Close to half the (estimated) votes have been tallied and they show Uhuru Kenyatta leading Prime Minister Raila Odinga by 53% to 42%. Officials say final results could be (released) as early as today.
The US Senate confirmed John Brennan has the new head of the Central Intelligence Agency after one senator threatened to hold up the vote (indefinitely) over the White House drone policy. Thursday's vote was 63to 34.
Kentucky Republican Rand Paul filibustered against the Brennan confirmation, talking on the senate floor non-stop for 30 hours Wednesday. He demanded the Obama administration (specified) limits on using drone strikes to attack US terror-suspects on US soil.
A (funeral) for Venezuela's late president Hugo Chavez will be held today. Venezuelans observed another day of mourning for Chavez who died Tuesday after a battle with cancer. Mourners were lined up at a Caracas military academy where Mr.Chavez's body is lying in state.
